Have you ever talked to yourself, whether it`s in the privacy of your home, in your workplace, or when you are shopping? While this unusual habit helps make sense of things, it also makes you look insane at the same time. Crazy people talk to voices inside their heads, so talking to yourself makes you look like a mental patient.
However, it turns out that there is nothing to be ashamed of, as this habit actually means you are a genius. As a matter of fact, the smartest people on earth do this! Just look at the monologs of famous poets, artists, and historians.
Albert Einstein, for instance, talked to himself. He was quite socially awkward in his early childhood and preferred talking to himself. As reported by Einstein.org, he “used to repeat his sentences to himself softly.”
Talking to yourself makes your brain work more efficiently.
In a study published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Daniel Swigley and Gary Lupya, two eminent psychologists, found that talking to yourself was actually highly beneficial for the brain.
In one experiment done by these two psychologists, 20 people were given the name of an object, which they were then told to find it in the grocery store/ supermarket. The subjects were bound to silence during the first set, but in the second set, they said the object`s name out loud as they were looking for it in the store.
As reported by Live Science, subjects managed to find the object easier when they spoke to themselves while searching. So, the researchers concluded that saying things out loud helps the brain work more effectively and sparks a memory.
Talking out loud to yourself helps you only when you know what you need.
When you are searching for something, saying the object`s name out loud is beneficial only when you are familiar with its look. Therefore, you need to be familiar with the appearance of the object; otherwise, you will only confuse yourself. According to Lupyan:
“Speaking to yourself isn’t always helpful — if you don’t really know what an object looks like, saying its name can have no effect or actually slow you down. If, on the other hand, you know that bananas are yellow and have a particular shape, by saying banana, you’re activating these visual properties in the brain to help you find them.”
It is worth noting that talking to yourself helps learn as well. For instance, children learn by talking through their actions. This allows them to remember for the future how they solved the particular problem.
“Self-directed speech can help guide children’s behavior, with kids often taking themselves step-by-step through tasks such as tying their shoelaces, as if reminding themselves to focus on the job at hand,” according to Live Science.
In addition to the benefits discussed above, talking to yourself offers additional benefits such as helping you organize and clarify your thoughts, reinforcing the message and focusing the attention, helping you achieve your goals, and putting you into perspective.
